Fennel has a licorice-like, sweet, and somewhat spicy aroma that affect the Digestive and Hormonal Systems. Used a tonic historically and recognized for its antioxidants, this oil relieves digestive troubles and supports a healthy lymphatic system. Fennel’s seeds are crushed and then steam distilled to produce the essential oil. Fennel has also been used to ease menstrual symptoms of monthly cycles or premenopausal symptoms.
Historically, the Romans and Egyptians laced it into garlands and awarded them to victorious warriors for its ability to bestow strength, courage, and longevity. It has also been used to stave hunger pains, earaches, eye problems, snake and insect bites, kidney, urinary, and lung infections, and to expel worms. The French also treated the intestines and female issues in addition to gout and cystitis.
When diffused or inhaled directly, Fennel increases longevity, and influences courage and purification. It can be applied directly to reflex points or area of concern. If skin sensitivity occurs, dilute with 1 drop oil to 1 drop Fractionated Coconut Oil. When taken orally, 1-2 drops can be applied under the tongue, taken in a capsule, 1 drop to 1 tsp honey, or 1 drop to 4 oz of beverage. It has also been used to flavor cooking. Use with caution if pregnant or if suffering from epilepsy.
Fennel blends well with Rosemary, Basil, Lavender, Sandalwood, Geranium, and Lemon. When combined it creates harmony with the other oils.
